Ferré/Marquet Vaccine Research Center
At the Ferré/Marquet Vaccine Research Center students can join members of the faculty and the local community in the quest to improve healthcare in developing countries. Established in 2008 through a gift from Dr. Francois Ferré and Dr. Magda Marquet, the parents of 2011 alumnus Alexandre Ferré, the Vaccine Research Center provides excellent opportunities for anyone interested in groundbreaking biomedical research with the potential to affect millions of lives. It also lives up to Pitzer’s ethos of global/local action, social responsibility, and cutting edge ideas. In collaboration with the University of Botswana, Pitzer faculty, students and community members work to “develop cost-effective vaccine production and address urgent health issues in southern Africa.”
The Research Center’s pilot project seeks to develop a cattle vaccine that protects against a common and debilitating disease. While its researchers develop multiple vaccines and conduct clinical trials (with promising results!), the program is also addressing a problem that has plagued vaccine delivery in southern Africa for years: the need for continuous refrigeration. The Center is developing vaccines that can be produced safely anywhere in the world and transported as a dried powder, thus eliminating the need for a “cold-chain” from production at a centralized lab to injection in the field. This method of examining all of the components of a problem is a reflection of Pitzer’s social responsibility mission to understand the full implications of academic endeavors. This approach helps account for the success of its research programs, which Pitzer tells us “garnered over $750,000 in external science funding to support faculty-student research” in the 2013-14 school year alone.
